Is Madeira an LGBT friendly destination?

By 18 Março, 2019 No Comments

Portugal and its islands have been under everyone’s eye for the past couple of years. Madeira and Azores, the gems of our country, received numerous awards already and they’re not ready to stop! Portugal is, today, one of the most LGBT friendly countries in Portugal. But is Madeira an LGBT friendly destination as well?

Is Madeira an LGBT friendly destination

The beautiful island of Madeira is a premium stop to several cruises around the Atlantic. This has led to several visitors, families, singles and couples. Including LGBT couples.

A few months ago, IGLTA, rede ex-aequo and Opus Gay (the two latter being two of the biggest LGBT associations in Portugal) have signed an agreement to actively promote LGBT tourism in the island of Madeira.

The Opus Gay president, António Serzedelo, states that the Madeira island has been LGBT friendly for a very long time but that this openness was merely hidden. Today, everyone can roam the streets of the island with pride in being who they are and who they want to be.

The Madeira island is home to many treasures. Beautiful landscapes, stunning views and some of the best beaches in the world – ever heard of Porto Santo?

Small enough for a short 4-5 day visit, the island is definitely a “must visit” that should be in every travelers’ wish list. The best part? You get affordable luxury, meaning you can enjoy the pleasures of a 5* at a fraction of the price when compared to other well known islands around the world.

For those seeking a calm place to enjoy the mountains and hiking, the Madeira island is also home to some of the best trailing and hiking spots. Known as the Levadas, many trails have been created to those who are more eager to be in direct contact with nature.
